Class cancelled Tuesday, Oct. 27

Class,

I am ill and not able to make it to class today. Here is what you should be working on:

1. As you know, we have been talking about feature writing. You will have a 500-plus-word feature story due two weeks from today, Tuesday, Nov. 10.

In preparation for that assignment, you should:
  • Review Chapter 7, The Feature Story, in your Steve Craig book. This should give you ideas of the types of stories you could pursue, which could be profiles of individual athletes, but could also, as the book notes, be on "the inner workings of a group of people or a team," "an explanation of recent trends or innovations in a sport," a preview of an upcoming event/season, reactions to a past event, etc.
  • You should go through the steps listed in the "Preparation Strategy" listed on Page 105, i.e., define your story idea, figure out what you need to research, make a rough outline, determine the key questions that need to be answered and figure out who needs to be interviewed. Type this up and bring it to class Thursday.
  • I would strongly encourage you to consider story ideas based on the Salem State campus for this assignment. Consult the Salem State Athletics Web site to search for subject matter. With your permission, of course, I would like to share the stories with The Log for possible publication. SSC Sports Information Director Joe Beitz gave us some ideas on his visit last Thursday. Once you settle on a subject, he has offered to help put you in touch with coaches or athletes. Contact him at jbeitz@salemstate.edu or 978-542-6544.
